Certificate in Management Studies

The CMS programme is for managers and for people who want to be managers.

It is designed to help participants to identify and develop the management skills appropriate to their jobs and aspirations. By developing these skills during the programme they should be able to improve their performance in the workplace.

The programme presents a variety of ideas, skills and management techniques, which participants may use to enhance their performance as effective managers. The content of the modules is influenced by the areas covered by the Management Standards at Level 4.

As well as being used in the public sector, the CMS is used by a wide range of firms in the private sector, and it is acknowledged as a valuable programme of development, particularly for first line managers.

The NEREO CMS programme uses an open learning structure to provide participants with choices about what, how, when and where they study, so that they can adapt the programme to their own needs and circumstances. Participants are supported in their studies by: five interactive workbooks; written assignments and tutor feedback; and structured Management Learning Contracts.

The Certificate in Management Studies, awarded by EDEXCEL, is a respected qualification in its own right. The programme is also designed so that it develops the knowledge and understanding needed for the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Management at Level 4, and it provides participants with some opportunities to gather evidence towards this qualification - particularly through the Applied Assignments.

It is also an entry qualification to a Diploma in Management Studies (DMS). Although it does not provide any exemptions from a DMS, it is good preparation for the Diploma programme, particularly if participants have not studied management before, or if they have been out of education for some time.
